Few things compare to living near the Gulf. The light, the breeze, and the easy walk to the water are part of what makes Manatee and Sarasota County home. That same coastal setting, though, asks a little more of the spaces we live in. Sand travels indoors, humidity lingers, and where moisture settles, mold can follow.
The good news is that staying ahead of all three is mostly a matter of consistent, simple habits.
Keeping sand where it belongs
Sand is relentless. It rides in on shoes, towels, and bags, then works its way into floors and upholstery. A few small systems keep it contained.
- Place a sturdy mat at every entrance and a basket for sandy shoes by the door.
- Rinse beach gear outside before it comes in.
- Vacuum high-traffic paths more often than you think you need to, especially during the busy season.
Catching sand at the threshold is far easier than chasing it across the whole house later.
Managing humidity indoors
Florida humidity does not stop at the front door. Left unchecked, it makes rooms feel heavy and gives mold the conditions it needs.
- Run exhaust fans during and after every shower, and while cooking.
- Keep the air moving with ceiling fans, and use a dehumidifier in rooms that tend to feel damp.
- Watch the spots that hold moisture — under sinks, behind appliances, and inside closets along exterior walls.
